Chip,
 I like Slackware's rescue set. You can get it at
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/linux/slackware-4.0/
 In the ~/bootdsks.144 dir, look at README.TXT to find which boot image
you want, and from ~/rootdsks get rescue.gz. Both images will build with
rawrite in DOS or dd in linux. 
 After you make the disks & boot up, the only file in the root dir is
README. That'll give a lot more info than I can about recovering your
filesystem.
 BTW, the main binary in the rescue rootdisk is BusyBox. It's a teeny
thing that does EVERYTHING. Look it up on Freshmeat and be amazed....
