Hi Peter When you open Disk Utility on the left is a list of each device and underneath each device is the name of the drive. If you click on "Macintosh HD" then you won't be able to zero the drive, just erase that particular volume on the drive. If you click directly above that, it'll say the name of the drive manufacturer and the serial number of the drive. Click the device name not the volume name, for example Samgsung or Western Digital, then you'll be able to zero the drive.
