I'm a newish up-chucker, but my take would be to get out to a flying field or to a
glider meet and watch. Get with someone who does hand-launch and get coaching. Look
at all the videos you can (my 3-R tape is on order) and above all practice, practice,
practice.

Go back and wade thru the archvies here and see what have been discussed (sometimes
_ad_nauseam_) about handlaunch.

And keep practicing.

Use a Javelin throw, and enough "up" preset on a spring-loaded
toggle switch to rotate HARD from the near-level or slightly down
angle you release the plane at, to vertical as instantly as possible.
The plane should "park" nearly over your head, NOT out in front (much).

Not that I know of, at least not advanced technique. I did buy
"The Book Of Throws" which is was a big
help in learning the throw. See Amazon .com

I also video taped Joe Wurts a zillion times in slow-motion and
stop-action,
it's on the end of the "Dynamic Soaring" tapes I sold two years ago, along
with coverage of the 1998 IHLGF. Can't wait till Paul Naton finishes his
2000 IHLGF tape!

When I run out of videos (about 40 left) I may run some more off with
BLOOPERS!
(...yes I got Joe's permission...heh...heh..) Plus the stop action footage
and slo-mo
and an added section on how to set up the planes to launch. Joe explains
it
all in the 3R's video, but not in great detail...

Just chucking the plane "kinda up" and thumbing at the stick doesn't cut
it!
...not even close!
