Mr. Border,
    When I cut an elliptical LE on my hand launch cores, I simply eyeball
and feel the shape with my fingers based on templates and the strait LE of
the un sanded panels.  It takes a bit  of caution and skill, but can be done
pretty quick.  Especially when compared to carving tons of little cores with
all those templates.
