I know 1/4 fiberglass rods works fine. I get them at Target/K-mart in the 
bicyle department. They are the 5ft poles that have flags on the end. They 
are bolted to the bikes and stick straight up. You can see them as they go 
down the street. If you use carbon you need to go larger.
