Okay guys, I did some test tonite with one other verifying with his
unit. I got the official External Antenna today (two actually).
What I found is that it does virtually nothing for range. At 50' to
100' the range was not improved by installing the antenna. The unit is
still very much line of sight. We have a small hill on our field and if I
dropped below the rise, the signal disappeared.
However, by installing a walkman ear plug with a length of about 3', I
could get all the signals even with the unit on the ground, in a place where I
couldn't get any signal with or without External Antenna. When someone would
walk out to the landing spot, I would lose them, until I would pick up the
earphone and then bang, I got him again.
Seems the Freq Checker need an earphone to listen :-) Sorry Hobbico, my two External Antennas are coming back your way. I
still love the Freq checker for verifying Freqs...especially my own. :-) So not
a chance of it going back.
