*About 15 percent of medical staff in Yambio State hospital reportedly
left public service and joined non-governmental organizations while others
resorted to self employment.*

Yambio State Hospital Administrator John Peter Sangara told Anisa Radio
that from 2009 to mid 2013, the number of medical doctors, clinical
officers, nurses and midwives dropped from 208 to 158.

He explained that three midwives, over 15 nurses, and four clinical
officers deserted their jobs in the Hospital.

Mr Sangara lamented that this drop out negatively affected health services
delivery to patients mostly the antenatal care department which attend to
about 100 pregnant women everyday.

He attributed the dropout to lack of promotion where most nurses were kept
in the same grades without promotion, motivation and allowances.

Mr Sangara said MSF Spain is helping about 60 percent of health services in
the Hospital.

He appealed to the state government to consider the issue of medical
personnel in the state annual budget 2013-2014 which is yet to be approved.
