Activist dies in NSS detention in Juba

JUBA (2 Mar.)

A human rights activist has died after months of detention in Juba’s
National Security headquarters on February 23, according to relatives.

Amnesty International said Alison Mogga, the deceased, was arrested on July
26th 2014 on allegations of supporting rebels in Kajo-Keji.

A close relative to late Mogga told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the
National Security Service office in Juba called to inform them that Mogga
was unwell and had been rushed to Juba Teaching Hospital for
treatment. However, he said, upon arrival at the hospital, they were
immediately taken to the hospital’s mortuary where they found his
body.Medical sources at the hospital claim that Mogga died due to Hepatitis.

Amnesty International’s regional researcher Elizabeth Deng confirmed that
the living conditions in the detention center in Juba is wanting. She said:
“We have raised our concerns previously about the conditions in the NSS
prison located at the headquarters in Jebel. The conditions including
providing adequate food, access to sanitary facilities, adequate access to
medical care and medication is needed. And I think the death of yet another
detainee underlines the fact that the conditions in this facility are not
adequate. There was another detainee who died last year.”Deng added that
many more people face the harsh conditions in the detention centres in
Juba.
