A young SPLA soldier allegedly raped a sixty-year-old woman in her house at
Böri Boma of Mukaya County, three kilometers north of Yei town. The victim
says the soldier closed her inside, raped her as she cried while praying to
God, Radio Easter reports. “The SPLA/M Soldiers came in large number, they
started greeting me that mama, are you okay, and then I replied I’m fine.
They left and I went to the zinc house to see what is inside but
unfortunately everything is looted by the soldiers then one soldier of over
20 years old closed me inside corked a gun to threaten me to accept sex. He
teared my underwear, laid me down and I started crying. I said my son don’t
you fear sleeping with an old woman like me, please leave me, I prayed to
God. My young daughter heard my cry and came in and I told her to run so
that she’s not raped. Since I am an old woman the soldier fidgeted to fix
because my private part is closed and it is used for urine. After that he
ran. I later came to ends of Yei Kare, but to my surprise I met the same
soldiers coming to another house shooting shooting shooting until someone
called Barah found me pulling myself down. I feared because the same
soldiers who greeted me will rape me again” The old woman narrates

The incident happened at around 9 AM in the morning at Böri Boma of Mukaya
County in Yei River State. Mukaya County Commissioner Daniel Jojon Clement
confirms that the soldier threatened the old woman at a gun point and raped
her.

The incident happened when a group of SPLA soldiers went for patrol in the
area then one of them branched to the woman’s house, he adds.

Director-General of Gender and Social Welfare Victoria Nasera Augustine
strongly condemns the act of raping old women, pregnant, breastfeeding
mothers and young girls. She urges the government to take issues of abusing
women in the state seriously to avoid members of communities from running
away.

The executive chief of Mukaya community James Mongu reported the victim to
the police and took her for treatment at Yei Civil Hospital.
