If the DC was really important, and lots of property was being saved by
these DC's, then probably somewhere over the last 30 years of their shaded
existence, someone would have fixed the prescription to invoke them.   I
wonder if whoever originally introduced this tool into the L.A. city /CA
building code, ever received sponsorship from a smoke vent consortium?

I can see the need for separating the ESFR's from CMA sprinklers, but the
draft curtain depth should have been  based on physics (e.g.  the ceiling
jet is about 12% of the entrainment height).  Actually, the entire creation
of the draft curtain/smoke vent prescription should have been based on
physics.  Physics that demonstrated a substantive benefit vis-a-vis the
draft curtain/smoke vent cost.  What good does the smoke vent do if it is
Santa Ana day, and the wind blows in and down the smoke vent hole, instead
of over and around, like assumed?
