Alas, even the santa ana winds are no match for the blowhard capabilities of a
good passive protection/vent lobbyist.
Sure, specifying stuff that works would be great.
But politics, lobbyists, incendiary rhetoric and checkbooks have far more to do
with our levels of safety- or lack of it- than what should be ruling.

Otherwise we'd sprinkler homes and have somewhere to drop our used nuke rods.
We don't, but doesn't it make you wonder why?

Subject: Draft curtain - uncertain

If the DC was really important, and lots of property was being saved by these
DC's, then probably somewhere over the last 30 years of their shaded
existence, someone would have fixed the prescription to invoke them. I
wonder if whoever originally introduced this tool into the L.A. city /CA
building code, ever received sponsorship from a smoke vent consortium?

I can see the need for separating the ESFR's from CMA sprinklers, but the draft
curtain depth should have been based on physics (e.g. the ceiling jet is
about 12% of the entrainment height). Actually, the entire creation of the
draft curtain/smoke vent prescription should have been based on physics.
Physics that demonstrated a substantive benefit vis-a-vis the draft
curtain/smoke vent cost. What good does the smoke vent do if it is Santa Ana
day, and the wind blows in and down the smoke vent hole, instead of over and
around, like assumed?
