sfSimpleBlogPlugin is a good starting point but you should know that the plugin has been made to function just for one (1) aplication, I mean the plugin is not multiuser (just one blog per application), I mentioned this because for social sites is often to provide a blog for every user, so maybe you need some work there. The other thing is if you are using sf1.0 or sf1.1 with propel 1.2 or 1.3, I mean If you use sf1.0 with default propel version (1.2) there are no problems, same for sf1.1 with default propel, because you can activate the compatibility. But the problems come if you use propel 1.3, 'cause the plugin needs some changes and there is no public patch for that. I mentioned this 'cause i'm developing my blog and i'm doing some crappy fixes to the plugin.
