@Gustavo...i uncommented RewriteBase and nothing happened @Alexandre...i removed the tags as you suggested and did get an internal server error
my error log has this line: Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration, referer: http://127.0.0.1:8080/ i guess you are right and mod_rewrite might not be properly configured, i am running on debian lenny.
