Jürgen Schult need not worry, however, as this was a competition involving the "antique", or standing, discus throw. Kruger's opener of 31.96 broke Michael Möllenbeck's previous record of 30.40 from 1998. Then the Russian went berserk with 32.15, then 32.32, and finally 32.76.
