Not sure why I thought it'd be a good idea to use the x64 version of Python 
with Tahoe ..  I removed the x64 version of Python 2.7.5, and installed the x32 
version.  After running the setup commands from scratch again, I was able to 
get connect to the test grid with no trouble on Windows 7 x64.  Sorry I wasn't 
able to test your workaround.

A workaround for this is to download and install
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywin32/files/pywin32/Build%20218/pywin32-218.win32-py2.7.exe/download>.
Please report back whether that worked.
