Dear Ms. Collins and Messrs. Keller, Calame and Kraeutler:
Your January 9 editorial and the related December 27 article contain
disturbing and provocative misstatements about our operations in Papua,
Indonesia. Our affiliate, PT Freeport Indonesia, operates the world's second
largest copper mine at 14,000 feet in remote mountains on the island of New
Guinea, where rainfall averages in excess of 200 inches annually. Significant
volumes of gold are included as a by-product in our copper concentrate, which
we produce in a physical separation process that does not involve the
environmental impacts of cyanide leaching used in traditional gold mining
operations.
In operating a large mine, environmental impacts unavoidably occur. We
manage our impacts responsibly. Prior to expanding in 1998 to our current
operating level, we conducted in conjunction with the Government of Indonesia
a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment involving more
than 40 separate studies by approximately 200 world-class scientists and with
substantial public involvement.
We continually monitor and report on environmental impacts, conduct
annual audits and periodic external independent audits by internationally
recognized experts of our environmental practices, undertook a comprehensive
environmental risk assessment in 2002 involving approximately 100 scientific
studies and achieved ISO (International Standardization Organization) 14001
certification for our environmental management systems. We publicly report on
environmental matters in our Working Toward Sustainable Development
Report, accessible on our website (www.fcx.com).
Far from causing "breathtaking" "environmental damage," the area
affected by our mine tailings can be readily revegetated and native plants
recolonize naturally and rapidly. The estuary downstream of our tailings
deposition area is a functioning, bio-diverse ecosystem with abundant species
of fish and shrimp.
The New York Times similarly mischaracterized the support we provide
for Indonesian security forces and ignored the practicalities of conducting
business in a remote area. Indonesian law prohibits us from employing armed
private security or arming our employees to protect our people and their
families, 98% of whom are Indonesian including more than 25% from Papua.
We provide financial support to assist security personnel deployed and
directed by the Government of Indonesia with infrastructure, logistics and the
hardship elements of posting in Papua. We adhere to the joint U.S. State
Department-British Foreign Office Voluntary Principles on Security and Human
Rights and we disclose our financial support in a transparent manner.
In addition to the taxes, royalties and dividends we pay to the
Government of Indonesia (in excess of $1 billion in 2005), we contribute
voluntarily and directly to the well-being of the people of Papua through the
Freeport Partnership Fund for Community Development. In 2005, these
financial contributions exceeded $40 million and since 1996 have approximated
$200 million. This program led BusinessWeek to recognize us as the most
philanthropic American company for the past two years.
We also arranged for a voluntary independent audit of our social,
employment and human rights performance by the International Center for
Corporate Accountability, evidencing our view of the importance of being
socially responsible. BusinessWeek reported on this audit in its October 24,
2005 issue under the headline, "Freeport's Hard Look at Itself -- The Mining
Giant's Gutsy Human-Rights Audit May Set a Standard for Multinationals."
Our management team and our workforce of approximately 18,000
employees and contractors have met the challenges of successfully developing
and operating the magnificent Grasberg ore body in one of the most difficult
places in the world. As Chief Executive, I am proud of our accomplishments.
Sincerely,
Richard C. Adkerson

....... Saya perfeksionis.
Terapi kedua dilakukan dua minggu kemudian. Kali ini untuk menyembuhkan fobia
darah.
berhasil turun, namun kembali bertambah berat lagi setelah berhenti
mengonsumsinya. Akhirnya saya putuskan untuk mencoba metode ini. ..........
Sekarang, bobot tubuh saya sudah turun menjadi 66 kg. Saya tidak lagi merasa
tergoda untuk ngemil dan melahap gorengan.
