Job Description



Waste Management, the leading provider of comprehensive waste and

environmental services in North America, has an opportunity at our

Downtown Houston Headquarters for a Senior UNIX System Administrator.

Upon joining our team, this position operates at the highest technical

level and provides direction and recommendations to install, operate,

and configure UNIX systems, servers, and related components.  Individual

will ensure high levels of availability and security of the supported

business applications.  This position will lead the planning and

implementation of policies and procedures to ensure UNIX system

provisioning and maintenance is consistent with company goals, industry

best practices, and regulatory requirements.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform

this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the

essential duties satisfactorily.  Other minor duties may be assigned and

may vary by department.



·         Performs installation, upgrade, configuration, deployment, and

administration of AIX, Solaris, and Linux (UNIX) operating systems and

hardware.

·         Coordinates OS version upgrades, software fixes, and

preventative maintenance to minimize risk and service disruptions.

·         Develops standards, guidelines, and procedures for

implementation and support of UNIX computing infrastructure.  Considers

integration of UNIX services with balance IT infrastructure and support

teams.

·         Resolves highly complex availability, capacity, and

performance issues.

·         Implements automation procedures and tools to optimize staff

and computing resources and their availability.

·         Collaborates with database administrators and application

support staff to design and provision services, and troubleshoot

problems.

·         Provides after-hours and weekend support as needed.

·         May act as team leader in project planning and implementation

at an advanced technical level.  Schedules and stewards project

resources and deliverables.

·         Designs and administers security access.

·         Leads efforts in periodic audits and security risk

assessments.

·         Works independently with some latitude for unreviewed action

or decision.



·         Acts as a source of direction, training and guidance for less

experienced staff.



Supervisory Responsibilities

·         The highest level of supervisory skills required in this job

is occasional indirect supervision of employees.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications

necessary to perform the job.

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience, in Computer

Science, MIS, Business Administration or similar area of study, and

eight or more of years previous UNIX experience.



Preferred: Master's Degree.

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Required:

·         Expert in AIX, Linux, or Solaris.

·         UNIX virtualization technologies (LPAR, PowerVM, or

Containers).

·         Proficient in UNIX security vulnerabilities and remediation.



Preferred experience with:



·         AIX 6.1 or Red Hat Linux.



·         IBM pSeries Power 6 or later.



·         WebSphere 6 or later.



·         IBM or Brocade Storage Area Network (SAN) technology.



·         IBM, EMC, or Hitachi storage technology.



·         Oracle database technology.
