George Sperling is, in fact, still quite an active researcher. My directories
list him at the University of California at Irvine. He had a paper at the
November Psychonomic Society on "Measuring the amplification factor of
attention to color." His interests seem to be directed more toward visual
perception rather than memory these days. A PsycInfo search would show you the
breadth of his research activity over the past couple of years.
...but he's definitely still around.
