Hi Pam,

There IS an elevator. The problem is not the elevator, it is that
when the elevator door opens in the lobby of my building,
in order to get outside, you have to get down _two sets of
stairs to get to the sidewalk._ The elevator does not go
down to street level, and the door persons are not allowed
to touch anyone to help them unless they are visually impaired.

There is one long passageway that goes to a long ramp that
goes out to the street for people in wheelchairs, but when
they get out there, it is illegal to park cars on that street
not to mention dangerous to stop a car, because of
the high amount of traffic. This is the oldest high-rise
building built in my city,(50 years old) and the laws didn't
exist to protect disabled folks that exist now. I am looking
to move to a building that is disabled-friendly. This placw
never will be, but I WILL make them met every current
code I can, short of tearing it down and rebuilding it.
Like putting in the four handicapped parking spaces
that don't exist.

Take care,
Kevin

HERE ITS A LAW ALL BUILDINGS MUST HAVE HANDICAP SPOTS AND IN APARTMENTS YOU OR ASSIGNED ONE CLOSE TO YOUR APARTMENT. IF ITS A 2 STORY DWELLING THEY HAVE TO HAVE A ELEVATOR FOR PEOPLE WITH WHEELCHAIRS JUST LIKE THE HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS OFFICE.WHAT YOU DID WAS DEFINATELY A EYE OPENER FOR YOUR BUILDING. MY HUSBAND IS A PLUMBING CONTRACTOR BUT HE IS A CODE INSPECTOR SO I KNOW ALL ABOUT THE REGULATIONS HERE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO FIND OUT IF YOUR STATE REQUIRES A ELEVATOR WHERE YOU LIVE. IF THEY DID THE OUTSIDE FOR YOU I BET THEY SHOULD HAVE A ELEVATOR. I WOULD CONTACT YOUR CODES DEPARTMENT WHERE YOU LIVE AND SEE WHAT IS REQUIRED, ALL STATES OR DIFFERENT BUT IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A WALKER AND HANDICAPP USE FOR THAT YOU MIGHT JUST GET THEM TO PUT A ELEVATOR IN. JUST A SUGGESTION.
                     TAKE CARE PAM
