Thanks for the photos. I'm beginning to think the best approach to bringing out I2S signals is to move the circuit board to a new box. This would probably mean abandoning the display. I wonder whether the board can function without the display attached.
Since you have the board detached from the display, maybe you could connect power and see if it will still play music?
