For some people the built-in server in the Touch will work, but it might also not work depending on your size of library, file format, network, customization requirements, performance requirements other similar things.
I wouldn't want to guarantee that the built-in server will work for anything else than occasional USB sticks from friends. Sure, it might work with a USB drive with your main library, but it depends too much on your requirements and the environment so there is no way to guarantee it. The situation might of course be different in the future if the server is further optimized. But at the moment I think the best recommendation if you want to be sure to get a trouble free reliable setup, is to use a separate server.
