I was afraid that might be the case. For some reason whenever I tried the standard 7.5 installtion for the Sheevaplug the whole system ran very slow and did not feel stable. 7.6 however is so much quicker and smoother in the menus and scans. I thought that this might be that SQL Lite used in 7.6 was the reason for this. I did see someone else mention this same issue on the squeezeplug thread but I cannot find the post anymore and I don't think anybody commented on it. I was under the impression the the code had been actively changed to prevent use without a router for some reason.
