Another option is to get an always on dedicated server, that way you
don't have to worry about the laptop being on etc. 

There are many different ways to do this. Since you already have a USB
drive the cheapest way would be a sheevaplug, about $100 and uses 4-5
watts. 

A really nice solution is a VortexBox appliance, it comes with
everything all loaded up, plug it in and go. But its not nearly as
cheap and takes 20 watts or so.

You can also put VoetexBox software on any old PC you have laying
around which turns it into a dsedicated server. 

One nice advantage to the dedicated server is that you can stick it out
of the way somewhere, in the basement, corner of the spare bedroom etc.
Once you get it setup you don't need a monitor or keyboard so it
doesn't take up much room, all it needs is an ethernet connection to
your network.
