i have a ReplayTV that's been working for around 9 years now. the HD  
DVR from my cableco has been working for almost 5 years.

the 1st VCR i bought in 1978 (for close to $1k) needed new heads  
shortly after the warranty expired, a job that took several months for  
the parts to arrive and a few hundred dollars to fix).

the problem with cableco dvrs these days is that unless you get a new  
one (unlikely) you are getting one that's probably been abused and  
then sent back out by the office. i try to tell my friends that the  
engineers designed those vents for a reason...
