It's based on one of Perry's plays, which touring companies are what
got him his start ("Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Meet the Browns"
are also based on his plays). Nobody in the white media knows about
the black theater circuit unless the local producer buys TV time, but
they do great business with black audiences, which tended to make me
take the "it's a black thing, I wouldn't understand" position.
However, last Sunday I went to a new play in Chicago called "Stage
Black," which takes a look at the plays about black life that play in
the white theaters, and the person from the black company who did was
as critical of Perry as I am. I feel relieved.
