Fair enough - we disagree about the merits of Mr. Perry's work. But you are actually not disagreeing with my underlying point. When you say "Jim is crap" do you expect the answer "but Jim is popular with the White culture"? Wouldn't that be something of a non sequitor? To elaborate a bit on the point: I get the feeling what some people might mean by this reply to criticism of Perry is really something like "Perry's work might seem like crap to some non-black people, but when viewed in cultural context it can be seen to be of high quality". If that is what they mean, then I think they should just say "No, Perry's work is not crap, it is good", and then make the case for what it is that they think is good about it. OTOH, some people seem to mean something like "Yes, I think Perry's work is crap too, but we can't say that since it is popular with black people".
