This is a great example of the bullshit that producers and corporations have been spinning for years. Lets say Fox (or whoever) will lose $3M a year over the next 5 seasons of The Simpsons - this becomes their rationale for demanding givebacks from the actors to cover that yearly deficit, amounting to $15M over the 5 years. Except, Fox (and or whoever) has made Billions of dollars from the Simpsons over the last 23 years in syndication and licensing, and will make hundreds of millions, if not Billions, more over the next couple of decades, even if they never make a new episode; money that the actors have seen none of. Even with no givebacks over the next 5 years, Fox would still be billions of dollars in the black from the work of these actors. They are not in fact losing money from their current financial model for the show - they just are not making as much money as they want to make. Or, more to the point, what is sacred to these large corporations is protecting the principle that only they profit from syndication+, not the actors, so they are insisting that each season turn a profit, regardless of how much wealth the content being produced will ultimately generate for them (and only them).
