I appear to have fixed the problem on my system -- by reinstalling lib6 and lib6-i686: aptitude reinstall lib6 lib6-i686
I noticed that most of the crashing apps (gnome-terminal wasn't the only one) faulted after loading a gconv module, so I just went for the reinstall. So far, everything works rather well.
