I have this exact error (same error msg in terminal and same GUI behavior) error when attempting to run software center or to run ubuntu tweak, after an otherwise clean and uneventful upgrade from precise to quantal. Release 12.10 (quantal) 64-bit, Kernel Linux 3.5.0-18-generic, GNOME 3.6.0, usually logging into MATE but problem does not depend on this.
