That is because the gtk/gnome font dialog is "retarded". Microsoft
Office, and its cheap plastic copies called Star Office, OpenOffice,
LibreOffice "real-time generate" really bad "italic" or "bold" of fonts
not providing that.

The LibreOffice is to blame here.

More professional software, is perfectly capable to handle it right, see
attached screenshot.
