if you have a config with a bpool and a rpool as the only two on a
Laptop (not server) version of ubuntu - You can safely assume a vanilla
configuration of ZFS.

No, it is not a ZFS issue - its a grub issue. Namely this script

/etc/grub.d/10_linux_zfs

Should be either more intelligent or more strict on errors.
