Using systemd-ac-power is only an option on noble and later releases
since it is not available in earlier releases of systemd. So jammy and
focal would not be able to make use of it.

This is the main reason I put time on getting the current script to
work.

Another solution for unattended-upgrades is for it to not depend on
external programs/libraries to determine the power state of a system and
instead have it's own built in implementation. (I would happily work on
implementing that!)

I find it more suitable for such a critical tool to depend as little as
possible on external libraries especially when those are not guaranteed
to be maintained.

There is also other packages that depend on on-ac-power that are not
working as expected because of these issues.
