...which is stupid... It is not intuitive (as in "like Windows" ;-) ), and not everyone has a middle button (which makes it less intuitive).
Without knowing about this trick, I found no easy way to create a shortcut to a file/folder in a write-protected folder. Creating a shortcut in the write-protected folder is not permitted, and it does not offer to place the shortcut. Sorry, this is in Linux Mint (mixed impression so far, anyway).
