I'm seeing this on Hardy beta amd64, on a Sony Vaio VGN-FE41Z laptop
that has a Nvidia Geforce 7600 Go and 1280x800 digital flat panel (DFP).

If I use displayconfig-gtk (Applications > Other > Screens and
Graphics) to configure the external analogue 1280x1024 LCD as Screen 2
Extended, the restarted X-session runs the Vaio DFP at 640x480 or
800x600 but usually within a 1280x800 panning area - moving the mouse to
the screen edges causes it to scroll the 'hidden' parts into view.

Even if Screen 2 is disabled and X restarted, the low-resolution is
retained.

I did a series of ten changes from the original installed
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and found the reason seems to be that internal DFP is
set as Plug 'n' Play and resolution badly set. The original (working)
xorg.conf had no resolution over-rides.

I tried to force Screen 1 monitor type to get 1280x800 with various
levels of success. It seemed as if whenever the dual-screen
configuration was attempted it messed up Screen 1 resolution totally.

I've attached an archive containing the xorg.conf and each backup:

xorg.conf - Good,working version (copied from xorg.conf.1)
xorg.conf.1 Original configuration, first backup
xorg.conf.2 - xorg.conf.10 Variations created by displayconfig-gtk
