Try disabling the Composite extension (this means that Compiz won't work
though):
type:
sudo nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and get to the "Extensions" section - if you have one - and make sure
that it looks like the following. If you don't have such section you
will have to add it manually.
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
type:
CTRL+X to save and exit
then restart either the Xserver or your computer and see if it solves
the problem.
