Do you have this issue on the stock karmic kernel as well? The mainline kernels as of now are based on jaunty's config and just adding i915 modeset=1 is not sufficent to enable KMS properly on them. It would be interesting to hear your results if you could try with the karmic's 2.6.30-7.8 that is -rc7 based (or newer if there is one by the time you read this).
