I have done two things and the bug seems to have gone away (but I have to do
some more testing in the next few days). I updated to a newer Kernel:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-get update
I believe it is 2.6.39-1 generic. WARNING: This is more bleeding edge, so if
you don't know how to restore to the previous Kernel, don't try it. (During
booting, hold the shift key to get to the GRUB menu and choose booting with a
previous Kernel. That at least will give you your system back to then back down
to the previous kernel).

After doing that, I also updated my NVIDIA drivers using the following
repository:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update

If you are going to add x-swat to your sources, it is important to
install ppa-purge, also available in the repositories. YOU MUST
DOWNGRADE YOUR NVIDIA DRIVER BEFORE MOVING TO A DIFFERENT UBUNTU
VERSION, that is why you need ppa-purge.

With the newest Kernel and the newest NVIDIA driver (both installed two
days ago in my x64 Asus computer) so far I have not experienced any
crashes.

I hope this helps, but please USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
