If you're using Ubuntu 12.04 and nvidia-173 then just do an update as
the bug is fixed.

If you're using an older version of Ubuntu then the workaround is to revert 
back to the Linux kernel your version of Ubuntu came with.
    Ubuntu 10.04 --> kernel 2.6.32
    Ubuntu 11.04 --> kernel 2.6.38
    Ubuntu 11.10 --> kernel 3.0.0

This means uninstalling any newer kernels you have installed. Because
the NVIDIA driver you have is too old to support the newer kernel you
must have manually installed.

Alternatively, if you can't live without the newer kernel you installed, then 
another possible workaround is to uninstall the nvidia* driver packages, and 
try to find and manually install a compatible driver from here:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
