I'd be happy trying to solve this if someone could lend a hand in pointing to 
the software chain of getting the raw events converted to 
ButtonPress/ButtonRelease and read up on the source code changes from 10.04 to 
11.10 that caused this. A Stefan in Bug 880544 also sees this.
Three different lines of Thinkpads: T410, X220, R61.
