Total lock up here too. But happens sometimes during boot too ! I don't even have the time to access login screen. So I went back to 11.10.
I have tried 12.04 with update from 11.10, clean install, live on CD and USB key. Tried with Nouveau driver, with Nvidia driver. Tried Unity, Gnome Shell, Unity 2D... everything froze.
