Happened to me a couple more times, the last while running nouveau drivers (nvidia-common and nvidia-settings still installed but no other parts of the nvidia driver). Total freeze; could see the mouse pointer but nothing would respond (even VT-switching). I'll try running memtest, but last time I did that it came up clean.
