I have been experimenting the same problem, complete system lock up, for
the last week (it happens randomly, about 10 minutes or so after log
in). It was very stable up until last week, never had any problems with
Ubuntu.

I updated the BIOS but it did nothing.
However if you boot the kernel with the option acpi=off, the lock ups appear to 
stop (but the display resolution messes up) and this really is no solution.

Setup:

Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
Intel 945GTP Mother Board
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Kernel 3.2.0-34-generic
