I never had this bug until yesterday. "acpi_backlight=vendor" and/or the
"echo 0 >/proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog" solution didn't work for me. I
couldn't install the latest mainline kernel, because of my restricted
broadcom WiFi driver I'm depending on.

Workaround for me was: Disable Virtualization Features of my Intel Core i7 in 
BIOS.
I think I can live without virtualization features for some time. But in future 
I want to use VirtualBox, where these features are necessary.

System: Thinkpad S531
Linux: Xubuntu 13.04 
Kernel: 3.8.0-31
