You seem to be booting in recovery mode, which will also break graphics
support in its own way :/

Please:

1. Reboot and as soon as the purple screen appears tap Escape. Now
choose a normal kernel and not recovery.

2. Reproduce the problem.

3. Reboot again into recovery mode if you need to.

4. Run this command to collect the log from the previous (failed) boot:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

   and send us the file 'prevboot.txt'.

5. Run this command:

   dpkg -l > allpackages.txt

   and send us the file 'allpackages.txt'.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => ubuntu

** Changed in: ubuntu
       Status: New => Incomplete
