@Trulan, how was NViDIA installed before hand? The first time you tried and failed was probably because you had residual pieces of a previous NViDIA installation still present (ie: from manual installation from the nv site), and so it was more likely an X11 failure rather than a driver failure. As your keyboard was still responsive, that further rules out an issue with the driver. (The real issue here is that after the change from init_MUTEX to semaphore_init, the system goes into a deadlock, and only a REISUB or Hard shutdown will get you out of it).
