You have been subscribed to a public bug: I did a jaunty to karmic update with "update-manager -d" today, I am at current karmic Release Candidate.
After reboot I selected the karmic kernel on grub (not grub2) and I could not boot. Ubuntu logo appeared on screen and after a while I noticed a console trying to pop on the screen. It seemed something related to resolution detection so I rebooted the computer and I replaced: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=98b97285-2d0b-45df-8300-b1b6c7164e1e ro quiet splash vga=786 with kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=UUID=98b97285-2d0b-45df-8300-b1b6c7164e1e ro quiet splash I had no idea what this meant. I was lucky. Ubuntu booted perfectly. My syslog had a lot of: Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu acpid: client connected from 1811[0:0] Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.603886] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP 3.0 bridge Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.603909] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device into 8x mode Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.603952] nvidia 0000:01:00.0: putting AGP V3 device into 8x mode Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.899369] Xorg:1811 conflicting memory types f0000000-f0500000 uncached-minus<->write-combining Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.899375] reserve_memtype failed 0xf0000000-0xf0500000, track uncached-minus, req write-combining Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.899637] Xorg:1811 conflicting memory types f0000000-f0500000 uncached-minus<->write-combining Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu kernel: [ 66.899642] reserve_memtype failed 0xf0000000-0xf0500000, track uncached-minus, req write-combining Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu gdm-binary[1786]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0,712939 seconds Oct 25 12:26:27 sergio-ubuntu acpid: client 1811[0:0] has disconnected Which I suspect can help to locate the problem. lspci | grep "VGA" 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000] (rev c1) I didn't expect Ubuntu installation failing at resolution detection and leaving me without GUI. I thought Ubuntu had fail-safe mechanisms to prevent that. Anyway, I imagine this are the risks of a "release candidate". Sorry if the bug was already reported, I could not find it.
