The word from the upstream developers is that fixing this on non-KMS is just too difficult. There are too many variations between OEM boards even with the same chipset. They concentrate all efforts on getting this fixed properly in KMS. Dave Airlie recently posted a patch which made resume work on his RC410 laptop. This patch might end up in a kernel soon. If any of you are into building your own kernels, please try the patch (using KMS of course).
