I just realised that *unmodified* OOo documents work perfectly after resume. So if I open a document and don't touch it until suspend, it will not cause the problem described. If I open a document, modify it, then suspend, I get the problem - it makes no difference if I save the document first or not. (btw, I am now on Karmic)
