For what it's worth: the computer I had this problem is now more or less retired. The SiS video is part of the motherboard. The computer still works. If someone would like to receive this machine for the purpose of working on this bug, I am willing to donate it. (Yes, I'm basically offering you my garbage ;-)
Computer lives in Mountain View, CA and can thumb a ride up to Oregon or wherever. Bug has not been seen since 2 weeks before Jaunty final release, as I had put in a PCI video board.
