@John:
I do see a splash screen. Everything is relatively quick, as I have an SSD in
my new System76 laptop :D I see a blank screen with a blinking cursor, followed
by a quick flicker to the splash screen, followed by another
blank-screen/flicker, and then the login screen. I think there's a very quick
flash of text either before or after the Ubuntu splash screen, which seems it
might be the message I always see on tty7: "GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r():
failed due to unknown user id (0)".

As for the timestamp of the file /var/run/gdm/firstserver.stamp, it
seems to be the timestamp of the most recent clean boot.

Thanks to all for the help. It sounds like I'm commenting on the right
bug, which is exciting in and of itself. I have a friend who purchased a
nearly identical System76 Serval laptop around the same time, and he's
seeing exactly what I'm reporting as well. If there's any other logs or
tests I can share to provide feedback, I'm eager to help out!
